19th Avenue North Asphalt Overlay Begins Monday, August 17

August 14, 2020
Starting early next week, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) contractors will begin a maintenance project on 19th Avenue North between I-29 and Dakota Drive. This section of roadway will receive an asphalt overlay to extend the roadway’s lifespan. In order to allow crews enough room to safely do the overlay, motorists will experience temporary lane closures.
After 6 a.m. on Monday, August 17, motorists can expect the following traffic impacts along 19th Avenue North between I-29 and Dakota Drive:
- Single lane in each direction will be carried head-to-head on the north side of the roadway
- Speeds will be reduced to 25 mph where traffic control is present
Motorists will stay in this traffic pattern for approximately one week. As project work progresses, drivers will be shifted head-to-head to the south side of the roadway to allow crews room to work on the north side. The project should be complete by early September.
An asphalt overlay is a paving method of applying a new layer of asphalt to a deteriorating surface. Rather than tearing up an old roadway surface entirely, an asphalt overlay project uses the existing layers as a base for the new asphalt pavement.
Flaggers will be in the closure assisting trucks entering and exiting the work zone. The NDDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones stating, “road closed.”
