I-29 Sheyenne River Bridge Deck Overlay Nears Completion
July 20, 2020
On Tuesday, July 21, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) contractors will remove all traffic control from the I-29 Sheyenne River bridge deck overlay near Harwood. Crews have finished all overlay and concrete repair work and are working to finalize sealing the concrete repair panels prior to opening.
Once traffic control is removed, motorists can expect the following on I-29 near Harwood:
- OPEN: both bridges will be fully open to traffic
- Speeds will resume back to 75 MPH
Over the next couple of weeks, the contractor will need to setup intermittent single lane closures on both northbound and southbound bridges to allow enough room to safely groove and seal each bridge deck. Drivers will stay on their respective side of the road during this project work.
The bridge deck overlay is a preventative maintenance to expand the life of the bridge and improve ride quality. If left untreated, the bridge deck is susceptible to spalling, which is when the top layer of the deck concrete becomes loose. The bridge rehabilitation work is expected to be complete by August 14th.
The NDDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones stating, “road closed.”
