I-29 Tri-Level Bridge Deck Lane Reduction Begins Monday Evening

August 13, 2020
Starting early next week, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) contractors will begin the first phase of project work for the I-29 tri-level bridge. Beginning Monday, August 17, at 7 p.m., crews will put up a lane closure running the bridge’s entire length. The lane closure will alternate lanes throughout the evening as the contractor foam jacks the bridge approach slabs and surrounding pavement.
In order to shorten the duration the contractor will impact traffic on the I-29 tri-level bridge, the lane closure will be taken down every morning by 6:00 a.m. and placed again that evening at 7 p.m. during non-peak travel hours. The lane reduction is needed to allow crews enough room to safely complete operations.
During non-peak driving hours, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., motorists can expect the following traffic impacts on the I-29 tri-level bridge:
- Single lane closure switching from passing lane to driving lane throughout the evening
- Speeds will be reduced to 40 mph where traffic control is present
Motorists will stay in this traffic pattern for about 10 days. Project timing for this phase is dependent on the existing conditions underneath the pavement.
Once night operations are complete, day operations will begin to perform spall repairs, crack sealing, pavement grinding and expansion joint modifications. Project work is being done to correct the ride and profile at the bridge ends. The entire project is slated to be complete by mid-October.
