Warm Weather Moving Up 32nd Avenue Project Schedule, 36th Street S Now Closing Tuesday, May 9
May 5, 2017
FARGO, N.D. (May 5, 2017) – This week’s warm temperatures have made it possible for contractors working on the 32nd Avenue reconstruction and I-29 bridge widening project to move ahead of schedule. They have completed large portions of concrete paving on the west end of the work zone, over the I-29 bridge, and today on the east end. They have also finished grading on the east side of I-29 near 36th Street S faster than expected. As a result, crews now plan to begin work widening 36th St., south of 32nd Ave. on Tuesday, May 9.
Early that morning, 36th St. S will close between 32nd Ave. and the Luther Family Ford building. All business access to this area will be maintained via side streets. For drivers traveling east on 32nd Ave., the detour route will be 33rd Street S, then south to 35th Avenue S. All westbound drivers will use 32nd Street S instead of 33rd St. Truck traffic can also exit I-29 using 52nd Avenue and travel north on 36th St. The closure and best routes are detailed on the map below.
Project contractors look forward to completing improvements to this stretch sooner than expected. The closure will last approximately three weeks, weather permitting, then 36th St. should remain open for the rest of the project. The improved road will include two additional lanes to accommodate for increasing traffic volumes and will create better turning patterns for drivers.
As a reminder, two north side intersections on 32nd Ave. remain closed or reduced while concrete cures in areas that were recently paved. This includes the north side 33rd St. intersection, closed to traffic in all directions, and the 32nd St. intersection, open for northbound traffic only. The detour route here is 30th Avenue S to 36th St.
The current traffic pattern on 32nd Ave. is:
- WEST OF 39th St S – Side-by-side traffic on the south side of the road, with westbound using two lanes and eastbound drivers using one lane, plus separate turn lanes for both directions
- EAST OF 36th St S –Side-by-side traffic carried on the south side through the east end of the work zone, one lane in each direction with separate turn lanes
- I-29 BRIDGE – Side-by-side traffic carried on the north side, with one lane and a turn lane open in each direction; new concrete curing on south side
- SW and SE I-29 Loop Ramps – Closed for improvements, all intersection access maintained via ramps on the north side of 32nd Ave.
Drivers in the work zone may still see flaggers present to slow down traffic or Fargo police patrolling the area. Slow speeds are necessary during this time so concrete can set and gain its required strength. Drivers are also asked to eliminate distractions and pay attention to signage directing traffic through this dynamic work zone.
